Signs Your Heavy Equipment Needs Professional Repair ASAP

Introduction

Just as we observe symptoms when something is not right with our bodies, heavy equipment will give indications before a significant issue escalates to a total breakdown. Operators too often ignore minor changes until the equipment just quits in the middle of a project and production stops completely.

At Walker’s Repair Service, we have seen it all, including a hydraulic leak from just ignoring the signs, or an engine that overheated and could have been prevented by just adding a quart of oil. Recognizing the early warning signs can save thousands of dollars in repair costs or downtime.

Common Warning Signs to Watch For

  1. Besides unusual noises or vibration, such as squealing, grinding, or knocking or a new vibration indicate that something is loose, worn, or badly positioned. This will lead to catastrophic damage if you ignore it.
  2. Overheating is an emergency warning sign of cooling system malfunction. If you operate an overheated machine, catastrophic engine damage is possible, such as a seized engine and/or warped component parts. Shut it down immediately, please.
  3. Loss of power or slow operation usually points to issues with the fuel system, the hydraulic system, or the electrical system. Diagnosing these systems sooner than later limits damage and enables the machine to do its job promptly.
  4. Leakage of any kind is a problem. While hydraulic fluid can be dangerous, any break in the oil supply reduces lubrication, leaking coolant can result in overheating, and fuel leaks are a fire hazard. Any leaks are a reparation priority either because of safety or money considerations.
  5. Warning lights are simply lights that the computers of a machine give you as a direct warning sign of critical faults in a system. Ignoring a warning light generally turns into a costly repair if allowed to make it worse.
  6. Abnormal exhaust smoke colors indicate different problems that may occur internally.
    1. Black exhaust smoke typically indicates too much fuel.
    1. Blue exhaust smoke typically means oil is being burned.
    1. White exhaust smoke typically indicates burning coolant.

Identifying the color of the smoke can help you pinpoint internal engine issues.
